Wonder Diet: Sirtfood Diet

Have you ever heard about the 'Sirtfood diet'. Is it really a new miracle diet?

Ha fine, there's another new diehype with an accompanying book: the sirtfood diet, a 'revolutionary plan for health and weight loss'. Best recommendation: the singer Adele has lost weight with it! The British authors of the book, Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, are respectively pharma/nutritionist and master nutritional medicine/author.

Behind the term 'sirtfood' is quite a complicated story. They are foods that can activate sirtuins in our bodies. These are proteins that are also activated during fasting.

Scientists are very interested in fasting and its effects on the body. For example, it has been known for a long time that fasting prolongs the lifespan and possibly also protects against diseases of old age. This research is still in its infancy. But the authors of the book 'The Sirfood Diet' claim that eating sirfood has the same effects as fasting.


What are sirtfoods?

What are the sirtfoods? The book mentions twenty of them:


* strawberries * coffee * capers * buckwheat * kale * cocoa

  • olive oil
  • turmeric
  • lavas
  • dates
  • parsley
  • rawit pepper
  • red onion
  • red wine
  • red leave
  • arugula
  • celery
  • soy
  • green tea
  • walnuts


If you eat that sirtfood regularly, you'll be slimmer and healthier, at least that's what the authors say. You'll see right away that it's mainly fruit and vegetables, but that red wine and chocolate are also on the menu. That sounds attractive of course!


The diet

It's not a question of just eating those products often. No, the authors have made it a pretty strict diet. The first week you mainly drink vegetable juices (kale parsley rocket juice for example) and only eat one meal a day. Also in the second phase the diet contains few calories. After 7 o'clock in the evening you are not allowed to eat anything. The red wine and chocolate then? That is only allowed in limited quantities.


Nice promises

Although research into sirtuins is still in its infancy, the authors are convinced of its beneficial effect. They make great promises: "Fat melts away with the sirtfood diet. That's because sirtuins can determine whether we stay thin or get fat". They claim that you also build muscle tissue on your own, so you don't have to go to the gym. Or that the amount of brown fat tissue will increase. Those claims have really not yet been proven.

Except for the very strict starting weeks, the sirtfood diet is not really unhealthy in the end: you eat a lot of vegetables, only unprocessed products and no sweets (except for some dark chocolate). But with another slimming diet you probably have the same effect.
